Prioritizing Black Mental Health: A guide to resources and support

Learn how you can raise money in your school, family, community group or workplace to support children and young people’s mental health. Considering the mixed findings relative to the impact of youth e-mentoring programs and the lack of studies focused on children’s experiences compared to adolescents (Kauffman et al. 2022), this study suggests that e-mentoring may produce more desired outcomes among children and adolescents when evidence-based strategies are employed. If youth were identified as having major mental health or academic challenges during the intake interview, or when services were provided, the program directors terminated support through the SOS program and referred families to school-based services and/or therapeutic support provided by local mental health practitioners.

“I feel like they’re scared to say it, because I feel like they feel like people are going to judge them or make fun of them for feeling that way,” Sanii said. I asked Sanii how people in her class deal with mental health problems. For Sanii in Albany, the project was crucial to setting up a support system in her struggle with mental health. The four school districts that cover this area are Osseo Public Schools, Robbinsdale Public Schools, Brooklyn Center Public Schools, and Anoka-Hennepin Public Schools (see Figure 1). Promoting mental wellness in Black youth requires not only addressing mental health issues but also fostering protective factors that strengthen their resilience. Only through advocacy and support can we create meaningful change and support the mental wellness of Black youth. Another organization is The Black Mental Health Alliance, which provides resources and education to promote the mental health of Black individuals and communities. Community centers and youth organizations can provide inclusive environments for Black youth to learn, grow, and develop supportive relationships. Mentorship programs can provide Black youth with positive role models and supportive relationships vital for mental wellness.
